At the start and end of each program, we evaluate our students’ math skills and confidence levels to ensure our program is effective. Math Diagnostics are given at the start and end of each program to determine improvement. Actions such as girls volunteering for solos, or leading the group through math problems are used to guide improvement in confidence levels, which are evaluated from a preliminary and end of program Confidence Survey.
“The most memorable moment I had was with a young girl who was very reserved and struggled with math. Throughout the program, I could tell she was becoming more comfortable around the girls and with the math problems. By the end of the program, she was teaching other girls in our group, and her math score increased 600%, with a confidence increase of over 200%. ”
“Watching the smiles and feeling of confidence of the girls who participated in the program at their FINALE! Awesome to see the feeling of SUCCESS from each girl!”
“I have watched my shy, quiet daughter participate in the SHINE program and learn (with the mentors’ encouragement) how to stand in front of a group and share — what a confidence booster! I love that the program focuses on math, but it’s also wonderful that the girls get to work with and be instructed by older girls that are incredible role models in the community.

“In my math class they gave a problem and I was the only one that could solve it… I told my teacher it was because of SHINE.”
“I love SHINE! It is simply magical there. The staff there are so great, giving their students hope is everything… this is a program I highly recommend to each girl.”
“She had never seen herself as someone capable of math, dance, or even keeping company girls interested in these things. The way she sees herself changed thanks to her SHINE for Girls experience.”
“I absolutely saw an improvement in her mathematical ability… This program is incredibly successful. I would love to have my daughter enroll in the program again, and I would highly recommend the program to families of other girls. What a great way to incorporate the mind and movement.”
“I really liked the way the mentors interacted with the girls! They were always supportive and understanding! This was very necessary with the girls who had some difficulties with speaking English. It was GREAT to have mentors who could speak Spanish as well as English!”
